Meet the Travel Foodies
One of the best experiences I have whenever I travel to a new destination? Visiting all the local food hotspots, restaurants, and food markets! This brought me to the idea of creating the Travel Foodies series. In this series, you will meet other traveling foodies revealing their best food/drink spots and tasty tips.
In this blog post, you will get to know Jody (Ongewoon Lekker). Jody describes herself as a beverage-lover by heart. She mostly eats at places that include a great beer, wine or rum list. Head over to Krakow for the best vodka bars! She also loves dishes that include meat and fish and she has a great fresh market tip for us in Florence…
1. Hi Jody! Tell us a little bit more about yourself?
Hi! My name is Jody, I am 34 years old and I live in Rijswijk (the Netherlands) with my boyfriend and two cats. On my blog “Ongewoon Lekker” (this means something like “unusually delicious”) I share tips about food and travel. This has been my full-time job for nearly 5 years.
It all started at the university where I studied to become a paleontologist (like Ross from Friends). At that time I needed a part-time job. So I started working in a local liquor store where I was the spirit-specialist for almost 7 years. After graduation, I worked at the Natural History Museum in Leiden for 3 years. But, unfortunately, there was no permanent position at the museum. During that time my mom passed away and I really doubted my career…
Then I decided to take a sabbatical year. During that year I started to write about food, alcohol, and travel on a blog. Just to get my mind focused on other things. People loved when they found out I was a girl writing about quality beers, wine, rum, whiskey, and more! I never stopped and have been blogging ever since.
2. What kind of foodie are you?
I am a beverage-lover! I love speakeasy bars: bars you can’t see from the outside. You can only enter them through a bathroom, hotel room, laundry place or pizzeria.
My favorite hotspots always have a great beer, wine or rum list. Or they have amazing food combined with cocktails, wine or beer. I travel with a hotspot list on my phone and I always research a city/region and I save the coolest places in Google Maps.
3. Which country has the best food and why?
I loved the vodka bars in Krakow (Poland). There was one bar which offers over a hundred (!) different types of vodka. You could order a 6-piece taster for only €10.
And the food in Portugal is just…OMG! Head over to the coast of Portugal to try their delicious seafood dishes or eat roasted pork in one of the local restaurants.
4. Your best local food experience abroad?
The best local food experience I had was a pretty long time ago! In 2006 I was hitchhiking in Croatia and I needed a little break from my hike. Luckily, I was able to get a ride from a Croatian family.
While we were driving to a camping site (where I thought I was going to spend the night) they asked me if I maybe wanted to put my tent in their garden. And…they would cook Croatian food for me. Of course, I said yes! I had the best local experience ever. The food was absolutely delicious and the family was super friendly.
5. The strangest thing you ever tasted during one of your travels?
Fresh durian is probably the weirdest food I ever tasted. I tried this tropical fruit during an Asian Festival in The Hague (the Netherlands). The smell is really bad but the taste is actually okay. However, I wouldn’t eat it again!
6. Which food hotspot do we absolutely need to visit?
I loved visiting the Mercato Centrale Firenze in Florence (Italy). On the ground floor, there is a fresh market where you can find all kinds of cheese, vegetables, meat, and fish. And on the first floor, there are several restaurants where you can drink delicious wines accompanied by snacks. This place is also really affordable. That’s always a nice bonus!
