Travel Blogger of the Month: Thoughtful Traveling

Meet Thoughtful Traveling who has been selected as the Travel Blogger of the Month! Who is Jessie, the girl behind Thoughtful Traveling? Which lake in Italy is her best hidden gem? What are her all-time three favorite travel photos? Find out more about this American travel girl living in London in the interview!

1. Hi Jessie! Tell us a little bit more about yourself?

Hi! I’m Jessie Wolpert, an American expat based in London. Two years ago, I packed up my bags and moved my life from Seattle to London – since then, I’ve started my travel blog ‘Thoughtful Traveling’ and spend every possible weekend I can traveling around Europe. When I’m not traveling, I’m either trying out a new restaurant or cafe in London, editing photos or planning my next trip, or binge-watching a TV show on the couch with my husband (with a glass of wine in hand of course!).

2. How did you become a travel blogger?

I’ve always loved to travel but I think I really got bitten by the travel bug when my husband and I visited the U.K. and Greece together for our honeymoon. Since then, we’ve been booking trips left-and-right and are having a blast exploring new places, tasting different foods, and learning about new cultures. I started my blog Thoughtful Traveling as a way to share my travel stories, recommendations, and photos with family and friends. It’s a side passion project of mine as I love writing and photography!

“I strongly believe that traveling to new places makes you more open-minded and thoughtful about how you perceive the world”

I chose the name ‘Thoughtful Traveling’ for several reasons. First, I strongly believe that traveling to new places makes you more open-minded and thoughtful about how you perceive the world, I certainly have experienced that myself. Each new place I visit, I leave feeling like I’ve learned something new (about others and about myself). Second, being a thoughtful traveler can encompass a lot of things – it doesn’t necessarily mean you change the way you travel and have to devote time to charity work. It could mean being more present. It could mean being thoughtful about how you spend your money and time. Mainly it means traveling to fit your own values and needs.

3. What is your ultimate dream destination?

This question is a hard one to answer because I feel like my bucket list is always growing! My dream destination at the moment is South Africa – I would love to drive along the coast in Capetown, sample some wines in the winelands, and do a safari through Kruger National Park. I’m hoping to go there this year!

4. Show us your three favorite travel photos…

I love this picture from our trip to the Swiss Alps (Switzerland). This was taken at the top of the Schilthorn, a massive summit near the village of Murren – we were blessed with good weather and could see the iconic Bernese-Oberland skyline. We were on top of the world (almost quite literally!).

Seeing the hot air balloons rise in the morning in Cappadocia (Turkey) was a dream come true. I’ve never seen anything like it. I also never thought that I would ever visit Turkey…it always seemed so inaccessible to me! But we made it and it was absolutely magical.

Petra (Jordan) should be on everyone’s travel bucket list. It really is impressive. I still can’t wrap my head around how these structures came to be…they’ve been standing for hundreds of years! TIP: Go in the morning to beat the crowds. It’s worth the effort.

5. What do you think is the best-hidden gem?

Lake Garda in Italy. Everyone knows about the neighboring Lake Como (thanks to George Clooney) but Lake Garda is where it’s at. It’s the largest lake in Italy! The turquoise color of the lake is seriously gorgeous and you can drive or ferry to the various Italian villages along the coast. You can get the most dramatic mountain views from the Northern part of the lake.

6. What is your best travel tip?

Advanced planning and organization. Take some time to plan out your travels and your itinerary beforehand. The reason why my husband and I are able to travel and see so much is because we are careful about how we plan our time-off, budget, and time spent on holiday. You would be amazed at how much we’ve saved (both time and money) just by putting in a little extra effort.
