Melissa reveals her funniest travel blooper photo
Do picture-perfect travel selfies sometimes make you feel insecure? Don’t be! Even your favorite bloggers don’t feel confident all the time. And their ‘perfect’ photos often take time (not even talking about the editing part). So what if we stopped worrying about what we look like on a photo? What if we were able to laugh at ourselves a bit more?
In this series, travel bloggers share their funniest travel blooper photo. What’s the story behind their photo? Would they dare to post it on their social media? And do they think less photoshopped, and even unedited photos, can become a trend? Let’s find out which blooper travel blogger Melissa (Emigreren Gran Canaria) shared with us!
1. Hi Melissa! Tell us a little bit more about yourself?
Hola! I’m Melissa, born in ’88 and currently living in Bergen op Zoom, a picturesque village in the South of the Netherlands. I’ve always dreamt about living abroad but I didn’t really know what I wanted to be later in life. Sure, I had thoughts about becoming a lawyer, writer, entrepreneur, vet, and even a real estate agent. But at the end of the story, I wasn’t 100% sure about any of those careers.
While I was studying Journalism I got the opportunity to work as a travel guide in Spain for the summer. It was the best summer ever! And so, I decided to go once again for the next summer. The following year I moved to The Canary Islands to work as a travel guide on the sunny island of Gran Canaria. And it truly was love at first sight.
Unfortunately, summer came to an end and I had to go back to the Netherlands. And so I made myself a promise to go back to Gran Canaria as soon as I had the chance. About three years later I was absolutely done with living in The Netherlands. Although I had a fantastic life for Dutch standards, I wasn’t happy.
I decided it was now or never. I quit my job, terminated my rental agreement, sold practically everything I had and moved to Gran Canaria with two suitcases and my chocolate Lab, Bram. Looking back, this was the beginning of my travel blog, Emigreren Gran Canaria (Dutch for moving to Gran Canaria).
So, five years later I can officially call myself a Travel Blogger sharing stories about life on Gran Canaria and travels around the world! After two years and about 130 articles, my blog has become an important online platform for tips on Gran Canaria. From articles on the best beaches and hotspots to eats, accommodations to tips about moving to Gran Canaria. And, I also opened my own online store with organic Aloe Vera skincare from the Canary Islands!
2. Can you tell us more about your travel blooper photo?
As usual, it was a sunny day on Gran Canaria when I decided to take my chocolate Lab for a walk on the field near my house. After walking for a while, I thought it would be fun to take a selfie with him. Unfortunately, my dog hates taking pictures and he felt like licking my face instead. At the same moment, I pressed the button to take a selfie.
3. Would you dare to post this travel blooper on your social media channels?
Of course I would! It’s not like I’m ashamed of it. I think it shows nobody’s perfect. Even your favorite furry child!
4. Do you ever feel any pressure to only post “perfect” photos online?
Sometimes I do. I think there’s a lot of pressure and competition in the travel community, trying to get that perfect Instagram pic, regardless of the cost. However, I accepted the fact that I’m not a typical Insta influencer. I prefer real-life events over perfectly curated Insta feeds. Call me old fashioned, but I think this picture-perfect thing won’t last.
5. Do you think less photoshopped, and even unedited photos, can become a trend?
I sure do! I think we live in a time where everything might be a little too polished, while most of us rather see real lives and real people.
6. What’s your best tip for someone who feels insecure about their online presence?
I know it sounds cliché but just be yourself. You’re not here to please others, so why care so much?
