Anaïs reveals her funniest travel blooper photo
Do picture-perfect travel selfies sometimes make you feel insecure? Don’t be! Even your favorite bloggers don’t feel confident all the time. And their ‘perfect’ photos often take time (not even talking about the editing part). So what if we stopped worrying about what we look like on a photo? What if we were able to laugh at ourselves a bit more?
In these series, Travel Bloggers and Instagrammers share their funniest travel blooper photo. What’s the story behind their photo? Would they dare to post it on their social media? And do they think less photoshopped, and even unedited photos, can become a trend? Let’s find out which blooper Instagrammer Anaïs shared with us!
1. Hi Anaïs! Tell us a little bit more about yourself?
Hi! My name is Anaïs and I’ve been living on this planet for just over 20 years. I’m from the Netherlands, which has been my home for all these years. On my Instagram I like to post pictures of my (travel) trips and outfits, but with a creative twist. Why you might ask? Well, since almost everyone is doing the same these days I would like to be a bit more daring and different!
2. Can you tell us more about your travel blooper photo?
My photo is taken in the “the Hague” area. That was the first time I visited this Dutch city. We thought it would be fun to get some nature shots. Man, I love nature. On Instagram you see a lot of gorgeous girls doing the perfect hair flip, making them even more gorgeous. So, dumb as I am, I tried to accomplish the same result. As you can clearly see – it went horribly wrong. I look like I’m being possessed or something (okay, that might be a slight exaggeration). Nonetheless, I think it is a very funny photo.
Good question. I don’t think I would. Well, at least not in my feed, that is. You just want people to see the good version of yourself, right? It’s not that I’m afraid to show that I’m not perfect, quite the contrary, but normally I’d like to go for pictures in which I kind of look okay at least. After all, your feed is what people see first.
4. Do you ever feel any pressure to only post “perfect” photos online?
Sometimes, yes. I’ve been insecure in the past (oh man those awkward teenage years), but if anything I think that Instagram has made me more confident. I know a lot of people struggle with seeing perfect images all over Instagram. I now know what it takes to get to that “perfect” picture. It is not real, honey. Those people probably took a 100 photos just to get that one shot and it is a possibility they (over)edited it as well. I now see Instagram as some form of art, in which you can express yourself in a creative manner.
Instagram stories on the other hand, are there to give a more realistic view of the person behind those pictures (at least in my opinion). That is where I might upload those less perfect pictures, to show to people that I can look very bad in photos as well. Just to be a bit more authentic, you know?
5. Do you think less photoshopped, and even unedited photos, can become a trend?
I think it is very important for those “perfect” Instagrammers to show who they really are as well. You are being viewed as some sort of role model after all. Your job is not to make other people insecure, it is to connect with them.
I think you should disclose when pictures are edited, for example when a sky is added, and if you dare, upload a less perfect picture – or a video even – to your stories from time to time. In this way you show that you are a real person, with real flaws as well, enabling you to connect with others. No one really likes that stylized and perfect person anyway.
6. What’s your best tip for someone who feels insecure about their online presence?
Just know that others are exactly like you and as people so often say: it is only a highlight they show online. Of course they have their low moments and no-makeup-and-sweatpants-kind-of-days – just like you. And as a piece of evidence from myself: they sure do have ugly pictures too!
